Bug Summer Camp (June 21-25)

Calling all bug enthusiasts in Grades 5-8! Explore the importance of insects through the use of hands-on activities, science demonstrations, and field trips. Campers will learn all about entomology from experts in the field, go on adventures around campus, learn how to collect and care for insects, and end the week learning about entomophagy while tasting treats!

Dates / Times

The Alabama Museum of Natural History Bug Camp will be held from June 21st – June 25th from 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM each day.

Location

Bug Camp will be located at the Alabama Museum of Natural History (Smith Hall at The University of Alabama). Visit our Directions and Parking page for more information.

Admission

The cost for this program is $175 for UA Museums members and $200 for non-members. Single Day cost is $50. Become a UA Museums Member to receive the discount.
Participants must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Registration is required through the Alabama Crimson Tide Youth Programs website.

Refunds and Cancellations

In the event of a cancellation on the part of the museum, either (1) a transfer of previously paid registration to an alternate day or (2) a full refund will be offered.
In the event of a trip cancellation on the part of the registrant, participants will be either (1) refunded 50% of their registration fee up to three business days prior to the program or (2) a transfer of previously paid registration to an alternate program day. no refunds will be offered less than three business days before the reserved program.

Bug Camp Daily Topics

Day 1: What is an Insect?

  • Campers will:
    • Make an insect collection
    • Learn how to ethically collect and preserve insects
    • Pinning and labeling methods

Day 2: Interacting with Bugs Outdoors

  • Campers will:
    • Go on an insect scavenger hunt
    • Learn how to be involved in scientific research through Citizen Science

Day 3: Live bugs in the Lab

  • Campers will:
    • Experience bugs from our Bug Room
    • Learn how to care for insects
    • Entomophagy Day – Make and eat treats made with bugs

Day 4: Pollinators

  • Campers will:
    • Learn what a pollinator is
    • Taste and judge honey

Day 5: Careers in Entomology

Campers will:

  • Hear from an expert in the field
  • Learn about different careers in Entomology
