Mission & Statement of Values

Eugene Allen Smith
Dr. Eugene Allen Smith

“It’s our duty and pleasure to help students, teachers, and the public to see and understand their natural history; and a taste for natural science, once acquired is never lost.”

These words of Dr. Eugene Allen Smith, the first director of the Alabama Museum of Natural History and second state geologist, continue to guide us in our educational mission today.

Our Mission

To advance the knowledge and appreciation of natural sciences for the people of Alabama through exhibitions, collections, and quality programs of teaching, research, and service.

Our Statement of Values

We strongly support The University of Alabama’s core principles of fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion and value every member of our community and those who visit us or interact with us in a different capacity. We do not discriminate based on race and ethnicity, color, sex, and sexual orientation, national identity, and immigration status, physical appearance, disability, religion, socioeconomic background, or in any other way. Our goal is to bring people together to discover, study, and enjoy the incredible natural and cultural resources of our region and the world.
