Trip Descriptions

Mini Expedition @ Moundville

Due to the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic, the museum will not be offering our normal week-long Museum Expedition program for Summer 2021.

We will however be offering a “Mini Expedition” program at Moundville Archaeological Park.

Join the Alabama Museum of Natural History and the Office of Archaeological Research (OAR) for a mini version of our popular summer camp, the Museum Expedition. This year, Museum Expedition 43 will have three two-day programs throughout June and July. Each program will focus on artifact cleaning and processing with OAR. Lunch each day, a behind-the-scenes tour of OAR, and a Moundville museum tour will round out each two-day workshop. There is the option to camp at the Moundville Campground for an extra fee. For more information about camping at Moundville Park, please visit their website at moundville.museums.ua.edu.

15 spaces available for each workshop – $60/person

*All participants age 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult for all summer programs.

Museum Fossil Excursion

Fossil Excursion, formerly Shark’s Tooth Creek Fossils, is one of the museum’s most popular summer field trips. We travel to the Black Belt of Alabama in search of vertebrate and invertebrate fossils from the Cretaceous Age. Participants should be prepared to get wet and muddy as we wed through shallow streams to collect sharks teeth and other marine fossils from streambed gravel deposits.

16 spaces available$30/person

*All participants age 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult for all summer programs.

Little Cahaba River Tubing

Float on an inner tube down a shallow stretch of the Little Cahaba River and splashdown rapids below limestone outcroppings. Enjoy a leisurely, wet day observing nature, eating a picnic lunch on a sandbar beach, and taking a swim at Limestone Park.

16 spaces available$30/person

*All participants age 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult for all summer programs.

Cane Creek Canyon Hike

Enjoy a naturalist and geologist-led hike through this picturesque canyon in beautiful northwest Alabama. Discover plants that have been alive since the last Ice Age and learn about insect species that are only found in this canyon in the entire world. Hiking path ranges from easy to intermediate levels.

16 spaces available$30/person

*All participants age 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult for all summer programs.

North River Canoeing

Come spend a lazy day canoeing down the North River and enjoying the sights on Tuscaloosa’s great lake. Enjoy a picnic lunch on Treasure Island and escape the hot summer sun in beautiful Lake Tuscaloosa!

16 spaces available$30/person

*All participants age 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult for all summer programs.

Bear Creek Canoeing

Splash through class I and II rapids on a five-mile stretch of river flowing through northwest Alabama near Haleyville. Enjoy your picnic lunch on the rock bluffs at Factory Falls and watch as other canoeists float through the rapids. Swimmers only.

16 spaces available$30/person

*Please note that all participants age 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult for all summer programs.
