Anniversary of the Hodge’s meteorite falling to earth

This grapefruit-sized fragment crashed through the roof of a farm house, bounced off a large wooden console radio, and hit Ann Hodges while she napped on a couch.

On November 30, 1954, a meteorite struck Ann Hodges in Sylacauga, Alabama. Other than being badly bruised, she survived this unusual event and sixty-seven years later, what is commonly known as the Hodges Meteorite is still being researched!

One such meteorite researcher is Dr. Julia Cartwright, Assistant Professor at The University of Alabama, who is currently doing analysis on the meteorite to help us understand more about how this star fell on Alabama in 1954.

WVUA 23 aired a story about the anniversary of this incredible event! Thanks to Joseph King for telling the story of its history and how it is being studied today. Visit the Alabama Museum of Natural History to see the Hodges Meteorite for yourself!
