UA Museums Invites Visitors to Haunting at the Museum

Visitors are invited to celebrate the Halloween season at the Gorgas House Museum and the Alabama Museum of Natural History!

For those who enjoy ghost stories, from October 23-27 and October 30-31, the Gorgas House Museum will be providing free haunted tours, sharing the spooky stories associated with the home during regular operating hours (9:00 am-12:00 pm, 1:00 pm-4:30 pm). The lighting inside the museum, provided by 2L7’s Lyndell McDonald, will set the mood for this historic house’s eerie tales.

While museum visitors can stop by the Gorgas House Museum all year round, the haunted tours in October offer a unique experience.

“The haunted tours allow guests to engage with the space in fun and seasonal ways that differ from the typical tour experience,” said Dr. Brandon Thompson, director of the Gorgas House Museum. “We find that often, visitors come to the museum for these types of seasonal events and then, will come back to the museum to visit and have the normal day-to-day experience.”

For a more family and kid-friendly event, on October 25, 2023 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, the Alabama Museum of Natural History‘s free Haunting at the Museum event will feature a Big Al appearance (6:00 pm until 7:00 pm), a costume contest, Mad Scientist Experiments, crafts, and activities! The winner of the contest will be selected by the guests and will win a prize. The lighting inside the museum will also be provided by 2L7’s Lyndell McDonald.

The University of Alabama’s elephant mascot and the costume contest are new elements to this year’s event at the Alabama Museum of Natural History.

“We are most excited for Big Al’s appearance and the costume contest,” said Joyia Davis, Education Outreach Coordinator at the Alabama Museum of Natural History. “We encourage all to come in costume and enjoy a fun-filled night with science themed activities and crafts.”

In addition to the after-hours event, the Alabama Museum of Natural History will have lights, candy, and a scavenger hunt available during the week of October 23-27. General Admission is $5.00 for adults, $3 for K-12 students, and free for children 5-years-old and under. Families with kids in costume are free during the week.
